Artistic Director

 

Length of Term: Minimum one year, with plans to renew.

Reports To: Board President

 

The Vancouver International Burlesque Festival is one of the largest and longest running burlesque festivals in North America. As the Artistic Director, your role will be to help shape the festival with your artistic vision and programming prowess.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Familiarize yourself with the previous years’ programming.

  • Create a comprehensive artistic vision for the festival.

  • Help decide, and reach out to, festival Headliners, featured Legend, and feature performers. 

  • Find and onboard adjudicators to review festival applicants

  • Review applications alongside adjudicators and the VIBF advisory committee, with a keen eye to inclusion. The final curation of the festival is designed to reflect the
    full spectrum of bodies and identities enriching and defining burlesque today, per the festival’s values.

  • Liaise with performers: including, but not limited to, gathering necessary tech and marketing information, as well as communicating and enforcing the VIBF Code of Conduct as needed.

  • Be available for media and interviews as necessary to promote the festival.

  • Attend regular meetings with the board.

  • Strictly adhere to code of conduct, conflict of interest policies, and confidentiality policies.

 

Time Demands (approximate) & Compensation:

This role is part-time, with the months leading up to the festival will naturally be the busiest. The role offers an honorarium of $4500.

 

Deliverables (in approximate order):

OCT – Info session to introduce new AD and help applicants understand the creative vision of the 2023 festival; festival applications open; Headliner and Feature outreach

NOV – Applications to the festival continue; Headliner and Feature Announcements; contact adjudicators to review applications.

DEC – Applications Closed.

DEC – Applications reviewed with adjudicators as well as the VIBF advisory committee.

JAN – Contact applicants with decisions.

FEB/MARCH – Gather tech info, bios, and promo materials from accepted performers; create set lists for Showcases; be available for media and interviews as needed.

APRIL – Festival! 

APRIL – post-Festival debrief

MAY – AGM 

 

Qualifications

We are seeking an Artistic Director with experience both performing and producing burlesque; with strong roots in, and knowledge of, our local burlesque community; and with a dedication to representing the diversity of burlesque in their festival curation. Two to three years professional experience is preferred. VIBF is committed to equity, decolonization, justice, and inclusion, and we welcome applicants of all genders, sexualities and expressions, races, abilities, and experiences within and beyond sex work.
